The Wisława Szymborska Foundation was established in April, 2012 by virtue of the Nobel Prize winner’s last testament. As willed by its Founder, it exercises stewardship over her oeuvre, by publishing her books as well as supporting publications, films, theatre productions, concerts or exhibitions about or otherwise pertaining to the poet

Wisława Szymborska Award

An important project of the Foundation is the Wisława Szymborska Award competition. The award has been given annually since 2013 for the best book of poetry published the preceding year. Volumes of poetry published originally in Polish as well as translations can be entered in the competition. The award is granted by an international jury comprising recognised critics and translators of Polish literature.

Adam Włodek Award

The Foundation also grants the Adam Włodek Award, which is de facto a stipend programme for young men and women of letters, including authors, translators, and literary researchers. Another source of grants is the Aid Fund, through which the Foundation supports writers who have found themselves in a uniquely difficult financial situation.

Residencies

In 2019 the Foundation has renovated Wisława Szymborska’s flat in Kraków. The apartment is to be used by Polish and foreign authors, poets, translators, and artists who come to Kraków as part of literary residencies, stipend programmes.
